this week's adventures in motherhood: sicky.

Being a mom is hard work, but being a mom while you're sick is next to impossible.

My loving husband came down with a nasty cold just after we got back from our Florida trip and despite his maniacal OCD handwashing episodes (I'm not using hyperbole here) and making him sleep in the guest room office I still managed to get it. Thanks, buddy. Now baby girl is sick, too, and her nose is so stuffed she can barely nurse. (I used to Nose Frida that stuff right outta there, but now when she sees it she starts screaming her head off and fighting me with every ounce of her being. She is unbelievably strong!)

What I hate most is not being able to take anything for it. I'm not a big pop-a-pill person, but it's nice to know that the Sudafed is there for you if you really can't handle it anymore, you know? But since it takes such a toll on breastfeeding, I'm out of luck. Actually, I haven't taken any medication at all other than Tylenol since August of 2010. Girl, you better pay me back for these sacrifices some day...no pressure or anything.

All I want to do is curl up in bed with a book or some TV reruns and tune out the world. Or go to bed at 9pm and sleep for 12 hours straight. (Are you laughing right now?) So I haven't exactly been earning my "mom of the year" badge this week. On the plus side, L has learned how fun it is to pull kleenexes out of the box --they just keep on reappearing, those sneaky bastards!

Thankfully, I've been able to rely on the magic powers of Dad-to-the-Rescue to make me feel a little less guilty about all the lack of parenting energy. Now I just need free maid service and a personal chef, and I'd be set!

Daddy and daughter, thick as thieves.

What's your favorite medication-free cold remedy? (And if it's a Neti pot -- seriously, how do you use those things? So freaked out by them!)

  1. No! That is the worst, I am sorry. Maybe today is the day to see if she likes watching some cheesy baby song videos or Timmy Time from Cbeebies (find on Netflix) for 20 minutes so you both have a break and some baby free time. Feel better soon.

  2. I am sharingin your pain right now. I just can't seem to kick this cold. 7-10 days is what they say right? I am on day 8 and hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Feel better!!

  3. I just start taking extra vitamins, and my husband swears by Emergen-C. I also drink a lot of tea. I never take any drugs either, over the counter or prescription. I think I have a slight phobia of drugs. : )

I hope you start feeling better soon. It's awful being sick and trying to take care of little ones. Sending positive, healing thoughts your way!

  4. We experienced the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Only Levi had RSV, poor baby! And he screamed and screamed when I had to use the bulb to suck out his snot.

I did sleep in for an entire day--and it helped a lot. I also chose not to take Sudafed for the same reason as you, but I got so desperate that I took one Claritan. I read that it was the preferred choice if an antihistamine is required during breastfeeding. It didn't help all that much, unfortunately! I also heard that a Neti Pot can't be used if you are really congested.

  5. Really hot tea, drank while standing in a really hot shower with one of those Vicks shower vapor things. Then curl up in a dark room with a warm blanket and the window cracked (trust me.. Fresh air..) and sleep as much as possible. That is...as long as someone is watching the baby!!

  6. Aw, so sorry. No fun at all. So, the neti pot is actually pretty cool, but it takes a little bit of maneuvering to keep the saline liquid from going down your throat. You can't use it if it's high congestion, though. I don't have any tried and true remedies, except homemade chicken stock, grapefruit seed extract, and Emergen-C. Hope you feel better soon!
