house hunting blues.

Once upon a time, there was a really cute house. It had five bedrooms, a heated sunroom with walls of windows, hardwood floors and a bay window, an eat-in kitchen where kids could play while I made dinner, a finished basement with built-in bookshelves perfect for a home office, and located right across the street from a great elementary school. Oh, and it was listed at an unbelievable price because it needed some super easy cosmetic updates and it's the end of the season here. And did I mention the playhouse in the backyard?

And then someone bought it before we got our act together. So I've been in a funk the past three days about it.

Okay, pity party over -- time to start working on all of the home projects we've been meaning to do here! Up next: getting rid of the hideous wallpaper in the kitchen and finishing our bathroom remodel (paint and a bit of tiling). What DIY projects are you working on right now?

  1. Bummer! But keep looking, you'll find that dream house soon.

I'm working on a huge garage organizing project so we can fit the car in there this winter.

  3. Oh no, I am so sorry!!! Ian and I are in the homebuying process right now too. We've had a couple gems that we were sure were the one get away, but I know that the perfect house is still waiting. It is so frustrating and stressful though!

  4. While that house looks amazing, can I tell you how not amazing it is to live across from a school? I've done it twice (my apartment was next to a UU church that had a school and my house is across from an elementary school that is now a school for both teenage parents and their children which is much much much better than elementary school aged children) and oh my is recess loud!

  5. Oh no! That is the worst and so emotionally draining. When we were house hunting we probably looked at over 50 houses. (My dad said he didn't think people should buy a house until they've looked at over 100 houses, ha! Still, I think it's funny when I read blogs or watch shows and people start breaking down after only seeing 4 houses and not finding THE ONE.)
There were 4 houses that we put offers on over a year period and even though I knew all the things they say you should do like - be willing to walk away, don't get attached, etc., it is sooo hard when a house slips through your fingers. You've mentioned a few times about this house hunting and a change, so I've been wondering. Are you looking locally, or thinking of relocating again?

  7. You guys are so sweet -- I know, of course, that there will be another great house for us down the road. It's just hard not to get emotionally attached when you're looking! Can't wait to share the news with you once we find the right place for us. :)

  8. When we were looking for a house we ended up losing three houses before we found the one we bought. I can hardly remember the other ones now. : ) But man I was upset every time it happened!

  9. Well, I do hope that your house hunt ends has a happy ending. The scenario that you mentioned is pretty common among house buyers. They always feel like there is a scarcity of good properties since every house they’ve viewed and checked have already been sold. But the truth is, you just have to dig deeper. There are a lot of beautiful houses in the market. You just have to keep your options open.
