she's gonna blow!

This is how my daughter drinks from a cup:

I know this video is of her drinking from a straw, but she does the same thing no matter what the vessel form -- straw, sippy cup, regular cup... it's as if she thinks any liquid that comes from a source other than mama is for playing, not for drinking. (She won't take a bottle at all and hasn't since month three).

Mamas, help! I am at my wit's end. I've tried warm breastmilk, cold breastmilk, formula, water, water + juice, straight up juice...nothing. Any tips?

  1. Oh gosh, I wish I had a suggestion for you. Other than just keep offering the cup. Sometimes when D was really interested in just playing with the water, I'd go ahead and pour a little bit on his tray so he could feel it and explore. Maybe it helped separate "play water" from "drink water?" I don't know, but I do know your little L makes spitting water look stinkin cute!

    1. Honestly, I think that's part of the problem -- my husband can't stop laughing when she does it.

  4. Haha... I have no advice, but boy did that make me giggle! :) Charlie wants nothing to do with a sippy, only wants to drink out of regular cups, and he does actually drink it.

  6. I don't blame your husband - that would make me laugh, too! Annabelle used to let most of what she drank dribble right out, but eventually she became a world class water drinker without any help from me. I'm sure she's getting lots of hydration from you, and from fruits and such, too, so if you keep demonstrating and offering the cup, I bet she'll start actually swallowing that water when she's thirsty enough :)

  8. That is one of the funniest things I've seen a baby do. And that is coming from a former nanny of several children! Since she's getting all she needs from your breast milk, I wouldn't be too concerned. She will definitely get the hang of it soon. One thought, though, maybe the flow is too heavy for her. Have you tried something that allows a slower flow that she could manage better? Even though it does look more like a fountain coming from her mouth than an, I can't handle all this liquid. heehe
My LO didn't drink from a sippy cup until maybe eleven months, but I also EBF until about the same time I began offering some solids. As long as her stools aren't hard and she's drinking your milk, she is getting all the hydration she needs. Again, such a sweet and funny video!
